LEXINGTON, Ky. - Trailing by a pair of goals to host Kentucky with less than 24 minutes left, the IUPUI men's soccer team notched a late tally but was unable to work all the way back in a 2-1 defeat. Sophomore Perez Agaba netted the Jaguars' lone score in the 78th minute off an assist from Matt Guy.

Guy carried the ball up the sideline before feeding Agaba, who put a left-footed strike past Kentucky (1-0) goalkeeper Dan Williams as the game was played in front of 1,412 fans at the UK Invitational. The assist was Guy's first of the year and Agaba netted his fourth collegiate goal.

"I honestly think our kids played their hearts out today. It was an extremely physical game," Head Coach Steve Franklin said. "Some of our kids on the back line like Derek Craig and Michael Wignot did a great, great job."

UK's Marco dos Santos put the Wildcats up 1-0 just before halftime as C.J. Tappel played the ball back to the attacker who lined  a low shot through traffic and past sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Keever. The game-winner came in the 67th minute when Josh Albers flicked a pass to Tyler Albers, who headed a shot inside the far post.

IUPUI (1-1) tried to crank up the offensive intensity but the stingy UK defense helped the 'Cats enjoy a 17-5 shot advantage. Agaba was the only IUPUI attacker to try more than one shot, yet four UK attackers attempted at least two on Friday.

"We had about five balls bounce inside the six, so if we put one of those away, we could be looking at a different outcome. We brought out the best in Kentucky, and according to their (coaching) staff, we've got a very good team," Franklin added. "We've got a bright future ahead of us."

Keever made three saves in defeat and Williams made a pair of saves in the season-opening victory. Franklin's squad will now face Louisville on Sunday to wrap up the Invitational. The Cardinals defeated IUPUI 2-1 in Louisville last season when they were ranked No. 20 in the national polls.

Sunday's kickoff is slated for noon.
