INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team played Summit League preseason favorite UMKC to a 0-0 tie at Kuntz Stadium on a damp Saturday night. The match was both teams' Summit League opener. Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Keever made five saves as UMKC was blanked for just the second time this year.

IUPUI (1-5-3, 0-0-1 Summit) also remained undefeated at home at 1-0-2 on the season.

"Our youngsters definitely got a taste of what Summit League soccer is all about," Head Coach Steve Franklin said. "It's what I like to call a six round fight and when you go against the defending champ and the preseason favorite, you've got to try and knock them out.

"We obviously would've liked to get the win, but we'll take the point."

Offensively, IUPUI's best looks came late in the match including a late scrum in regulation and two quality chances in the second overtime period. In the final minute of regulation, freshman Kyle Hyland drove a corner kick into the UMKC six-yard box where freshman Michael Wignot got an initial touch on the ball. Unfortunately, nobody was able to get a solid strike on the ball before the final horn.

In the 103rd minute, Tyler Fritcha nearly ended it when he bent a 30-yard shot on frame, forcing UMKC goalkeeper Ken Cooper to retreat to his back line to tip the ball over the crossbar. The Jags final clean look of the night came with just 62 seconds left, set up by a long driven pass from Weston Hawkins.

Sophomore Yogi Snider got on the end of the pass and headed a shot right at Cooper from point blank range.

UMKC (2-4-1, 0-0-1 Summit) outshot IUPUI 19-15 overall and 5-4 on frame, however the Jaguars had eight corner kicks to the Kangaroos' three. John Bayron Sosa led all players with four attempts and Bryan Perez tried three.

"Our boys did a good job of bottling up, who I think is the best player in the conference in (Bryan) Perez," Franklin said. "We challenged the boys to make someone beside Perez and Sosa beat them. We didn't want to let their big guns beat us."

Sosa hit a bullet into the arms of Keever in the 67th minute for UMKC's best scoring chance of the game.

Saturday's game was IUPUI's fifth overtime game in nine outings this season and the third time in four games the Jaguars have been blanked.

"The main thing we've got ot do moving forward, is to mentally battle these games out," Franklin said. "We were very careless with the ball, especially with our front runners and we didn't make the best decisions on the outside."

IUPUI's homestand continues on Saturday, Oct. 3 when the Jaguars host SIU-Edwardsville at Kuntz Stadium at 2:00 p.m.. Like always, live stats will be available at kickoff and the match can be seen as part of IUPUI LIVE! on IUPUIJags.com.
