VALPARAISO, Ind. - For the third time on the young season, the IUPUI men's soccer team went to overtime with a Horizon League foe. In the first two instances, the Jaguars collected a win and a tie, but misfortune finally reared its ugly head on Sunday as Valparaiso netted a penalty kick in overtime to hand IUPUI a 2-1 defeat.
Former Valparaiso midfielder
Kyle Gentile scored the first goal of his IUPUI career in the 57th minute to knot the score at 1-1, but VU's Zack Stivers tallied the game-winner just 2:22 into overtime. IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper
Tyler Keever got a hand on Stivers' attempt, but was unable to keep it out of the net for his second goal of the season.
IUPUI (1-3-1) had a one-man advantage going into the extra period after VU's Connor Cappelletti was sent off the field with 1:48 remaining in regulation with a straight red card. However, the Jaguars were unable to capitalize, getting just a
Kyle Hyland attempt early in the overtime period before the decisive infraction was whistled.
Valpo (2-2-0) took a 1-0 lead just 3:20 before halftime when Stefan Antonijevic lined a shot past Keever from 14 yards out. The VU attacker corralled a loose ball well inside the 18-yard box and drilled a shot to Keever's right for his first score of the year.
Gentile answered with a free kick from nearly 30 yards out past VU's Ryan Schwarz to pull IUPUI even. The Jaguars' midfielder was IUPUI's top offensive threat throughout the match. In the 27th minute, he had a free kick ring off the bottom side of the crossbar and back into the field of play and later had a shot in the 68th minute cleared off the back line by Valpo's Adrian Ortiz. Gentile had already beaten Schwarz on the play, but his shot from 15 yards out was stymied from the right side.
IUPUI's
Derek Craig also made a team save in the first half when he cleared a Cappelletti out of danger in the game's 17th minute.
Gentile and Stivers finished the day with four shots each and Hyland attempted three for the Jags. VU outshot IUPUI 15-11 overall, 8-3 on frame and had four corner kicks to IUPUI's one. Keever made five stops in goal for IUPUI in over 92 minutes work.
The Jaguars return to action next Friday night when they take part in the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic and play host Evansville at 7:30 p.m.. Then on Sunday, IUPUI will take on Eastern Illinois at noon.
