JAGUAR SWIMMERS WRAP UP REGULAR SEASON IN STYLE

Men beat Valparaiso while women split against VU and Butler

INDIANAPOLIS -- Making a late addition to the end of the regular season schedule paid off for the IUPUI swimming and diving teams.  Swimming at Warren Central High School, the men's swimming and diving team narrowly defeated Valparaiso, 139.5-131.5, while the women's team downed Butler, 170-94, on Sunday afternoon.

Swimming their final regular season meet, the IUPUI men got past Valparaiso in the final event of the meet, taking second and third in the 400 freestyle relay to cement their win.  Individually, Tyler McGowan shined in the pool, winning three events to help carry the Jaguars.

In McGowan's first event, the 200 freestyle, the junior won in 1:47.54, closing in 26.46 to take the win.  In the 200 butterfly, McGowan cruised to a win in 2:01.40, winning by just under three seconds.  Swimming his final individual event, the 200 IM, McGowan hit the wall in 2:00.73, pulling away to win by two seconds.

The Jaguars dominated the breaststroke events, as well, as Craig Noakes and Andrew Heideman traded victories in the 50 and 200 breaststroke.  The duo went 1-2 in the 50 breaststroke, with Noakes winning in 28.84; in the 200, it was Heideman who took the win, touching the wall in 2:15.92.

Michael Steurer and Jaron Tuttle also closed the regular season with victories, as Steurer won the 200 backstroke and Tuttle scored a 328.15 on the 1-meter board to claim the win.

On the women's side of the pool, the Jaguars got wins from Sara Smith and Elizabeth Scott, while using podium finishes to beat Butler.  Valparaiso defeated the women, 166-103.

Swimming the 50 fly, Smith outsprinted her competition to hit the wall in 28.09, winning by .15 seconds.  Scott won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 253.20.

The regular season completed, the IUPUI swimming and diving teams will head to Rochester, Michigan, to compete in The Summit League Championships.  The meet will take place from Feb. 19-21, with morning sessions beginning at 11 a.m. and evening sessions starting at 6:30 p.m. ET.
