Monday's NCAA Selection Show Viewing Party to be held in Campus Center
BROOKINGS, S.D. - The IUPUI women's soccer team scored four second half goals to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and knock off top seeded South Dakota State in The Summit League Tournament championship match at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Jaguars earned their first-ever Summit League Tournament title and will now play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's 12-year history.
"We still trying to be in the moment," Head Coach
Chris Johnson said afterwards. "This is a big step for the program. Right now, we're going to focus on enjoying everything we've accomplished for the next 24 hours. Then, we'll get back to work and start preparing for the next game.
"We don't know who we're going to be playing, but we're going to be prepared for that game."
IUPUI (17-4) came out jittery, allowing a goal just over seven minutes in to SDSU's Danni Healy.
"We came out very nervous. I don't want to say that goal was inevitable, but some kids that we've relied on all year were just a little nervous at the beginning of the game," Johnson said. "Similar to the Oral Roberts game, I don't think we connected a pass across midfield in the first 15 minutes of the game. We made an adjustment though and dropped Alicia (Brock) back into the midfield and she helped stabilize us a little. We put
Stacy Levack in up top and she gave us a big boost."
As the half played on, the patient IUPUI attack began getting better looks including sophomore
Alex Baer earning a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Although Baer pushed her PK wide, the Jaguars' offense was only getting started. Levack drew a couple of hard fouls late in the first half, showing her teammates that they could take advantage of a physical contest through quality restarts.
A free kick finally pulled IUPUI even early in the second half. Senior
Stephanie Hoffman sniped the restart from just beyond the 18-yard box past SDSU goalkeeper Brienna Rogers for her second goal of the season.
"It was a huge sense of relief when Hoff scored that first goal," Johnson said. "From that point on, it was game on. That really energized us and gave us all a lift."
The match remained tied for the next 15 minutes until freshman
Kelli Parks tallied the game-winner in the 69th minute. Sophomore
Chelsi McHenry lofted a long flip throw into the SDSU (11-7-2) box where Parks was able to get a touch on the ball for her second score of the season. With the Jackrabbits pushing more players into the attack, the Jaguars were able to get quick counters and added a pair of late insurance goals to seal the victory.
In the 86th minute, McHenry scored her second goal of the season, thanks to a short cross from sophomore
Megan Hock. Hock carried the ball up the side before rolling a pass back to McHenry who slid a shot into the bottom left of the net. It was Hock's sixth assist of the season, pulling her even with Paige Stuart (2000) for the single-season record in that category.
Hock later scored in the final seconds when she hit a ball from midfield that sailed over Rogers' head as she was well off her back line in an effort to contribute to the attack. It was Hock's team-high 12th goal of the season.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell continued her brilliance, posting seven saves in the win. Farrell was named the Tournament MVP after allowing just one goal in 180 minutes work and recording 12 saves in the two victores. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Hock, Hoffman and sophomore defender
Margaret Allgeier.
