INDIANAPOLIS - Junior midfielder
Nate Ohmer scored a pair of goals in an 11-minute span as the IUPUI men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 overtime win over Oral Roberts in Summit League play at Kuntz Stadium on Saturday. Ohmer's multi-goal game was the first by an IUPUI player since November 2007 and the win was the Jaguars' first since the season-opening 2-1 overtime win over Detroit on Sept. 1.
"It was a team effort. Everyone worked hard, even though it was a little sloppy at times," Ohmer said. "I was just in the right place at the right time and put them away."
Oral Roberts (6-6-2, 2-2-1 Summit) took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute when Sterling Copeland banged home a Jim Reinsma restart from inside the six-yard box. Reinsma kept the ball on the ground from just inside the right corner, hitting Copeland who pushed a shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Tyler Keever for his third goal of the season.
Trailing 1-0, IUPUI (2-10-3, 1-2-1 Summit) frenetically continued to push more players forward as time dwindled down in regulation.
"Today was less about coaching and more about being a riverboat gambler. The gamble paid off," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "We finished the game with no midfielders and six front runners in the attack because we had to have a goal. A draw didn't do us any good. In the overtime, we stuck with five players in the attack and I've never done anything like that."
Even after IUPUI came up empty on a penalty kick earned by
Caleb Lindemann in the 72nd minute, the Jaguars' attack continued to push the pace and control the second half tempo. Sophomore
Yogi Snider took the PK, but saw ORU reserve goalkeeper Irving Peralta dive to his left to keep the ball out of the net.
The ensuing flurry led to IUPUI earning two corner kicks, but the Jags were unable to get anything on frame.
Ohmer finally broke through with just 4:41 left, setup by a
Kyle Hyland corner kick. Hyland sent the ball to Lindemann just inside the top of 18-yard box. His attempt didn't make it on frame, but Ohmer was there to pick up the scraps and poke a shot inside the left post among a scrum of players.
After the IUPUI defense weathered an ORU storm to start overtime, the Jaguars got the game-winner in the 96th minute. The game's final buildup came when Snider sent a long throw-in inside the 18-yard box and the ball came free to sophomore
Perez Agaba. Agaba didn't get a clean touch on the shot, but corkscrewed the ball to Ohmer who tapped home his fourth goal of the year and second career game-winner, both which have come against ORU. It was Ohmer's fourth goal in IUPUI's last three games.
After taking an initial 1-0 lead, ORU nearly made it 2-0 just minutes later when Vince Tizzone caught Keever off his back line. His shot from the right flank was headed for paydirt when junior defender
Weston Hawkins swept in behind his goalkeeper and cleared the ball off the line.
IUPUI freshman
Michael Wignot had a similar attempt at the other end later in the second half.
The Jaguars wore pink jerseys on Saturday as part of its second annual 'Kick for the Cure' initiative in the ongoing fight against breast cancer. The jerseys were auctioned off over the course of the day and a generous donation from Richard Mann helped the Jaguars raise over $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Four other jerseys are still available for online bidding by
clicking here. The online bidding will be closed on Sunday at midnight.
"Today was about, not only the opportunity to raise funds for a great cause, but also about fighting for our conference lives," Franklin said. "My boys ever since I came to IUPUI in '95, have participated in the Race for the Cure. However, because of spring scheduling, we haven't been able to participate the past two years. So we kicked around the idea of shaping a game around an opportunity to raise some funds for the cause."
IUPUI continues its three-game homestand on Wednesday night when it hosts Marian University at Kuntz Stadium at 7:00 p.m..
