INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team saw its 12-game winning streak come to a halt on Sunday as the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 decision to South Dakota State in Summit League action at Kuntz Stadium. SDSU tallied the game-winner with just 50 seconds left in regulation when Kaitlin Justice scored for the fourth time this season, thanks to an assist from Courtney Higgins.
Higgins settled a long pass inside the 18-yard box before playing the ball back to Justice, who was able to flare a shot to the right of IUPUI goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell for the game's only score.
"I think that we've become a little complacent in some areas in what we're doing," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We didn't take advantage of the opportunities in front of us today. If people are going to foul us, especially around the box, then we have to take advantage of set piece opportunities and today we didn't do that."
IUPUI (12-3, 4-1 Summit) was unable to mount any semblance of an attack in the first half against the more physical Jackrabbits, attempting just two shots in the opening 45 minutes. Senior
Stephanie Hoffman had an apparent goal wiped off the scoreboard midway through the first half when she sent an indirect kick into the net past Brienna Rogers, but the score was disallowed since it wasn't touched on the field of play.
SDSU (7-6-2, 4-2 Summit) had some quality chances including a shot by Brittany Sipp in the 37th minute that was aimed inside the near post before Farrell made a sliding save to keep the game tied.
In the second half, IUPUI was the more aggressive offensive team, beginning with a 35-yard drive from Hoffman that banged off the crossbar in the 48th minute. The Jaguars seemingly caught the break it needed in the 66th minute when
Alicia Brock slipped in behind the SDSU defense, setting up a breakaway with Rogers.
Rogers came well off her line to pull down Brock outside the 18-yard box and was immediately issued a straight red card. However, IUPUI was unable to capitalize on the ensuing free kick from the top of the 18.
"Their keeper saved the game for them with that play she made," Johnson said. "She saved what probably would've been a sure goal and that won the game for them."
With a man advantage, IUPUI continued to keep the offensive pressure on but could not solve the SDSU defense. SDSU took advantage of the Jaguars' dedication to the attack by countering in the final minutes to find the defense disjointed.
"If we want to be successful at the highest level of the conference, we have to go out and make all the plays that it takes to be successful," Johnson said. "Today, we didn't make the plays."
IUPUI outshot SDSU 13-10 overall and an 8-1 edge on corner kicks. Brock and
Katrina McCrory both had three shot attempts while Justice had three for the Jackrabbits.
Farrell made six saves in defeat and Rogers made four stops in just over 65 minutes work. Daniella Pappas needed just one stop to collect the win in relief.
The loss snapped IUPUI's school record 12-game winning streak, which was second to only Stanford in terms of longest current winning streaks in the country. It was also IUPUI's first loss in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits were the only team to knock off the Jags in Summit League play in 2008 as well.
IUPUI will now hit the road next weekend, playing at Oral Roberts on Friday and at Centenary on Sunday. Friday's match is scheduled to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. in Tulsa.
