CEDAR CITY, Utah - The IUPUI women's soccer team took advantage of a generous bounce to slip past Southern Utah, 1-0 at Thunderbird Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Megan Hock netted the game's lone goal in the 50th minute for her school record tying fifth game-winner of the season.
It was her eighth goal in 12 games in 2009 as the Jaguars extended the nation's second-longest winning streak to 11 games.
IUPUI (11-2, 3-0 Summit) got the break it needed when Southern Utah Charly Booth took a bad clearance of a pass from one of her defensive players. Booth swung and spun the ball backwards, stumbling in the process. From there, Hock was able to take the loose ball and walk it into the net.
"We told the girls at halftime to be sure we're pressuring the ball in the back," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "
Leslie Walker did a good job of pressuring and forced them into the mistake. Megan (Hock) was there to capitalize."
The IUPUI defense continued its strong play of late, recording its third straight shutout in Summit League play. On Saturday, senior goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell made eight saves and received plenty of her from her teammates along the back line.
"Our defense played huge today," Johnson said. "There were several goal line clearances in there. Southern Utah played very direct and it was a tough style to go against. They're a big team and played physical and just pounded it down the field."
IUPUI also got a break in the sixth minute when Jessica Yukihiro had a header goal wiped off the scoreboard when a Southern Utah foul was called in the box. The Jaguars best offensive chance of the first half came on a Walker bullet in the 18th minute that Booth was able to snare.
"We had a hard time getting in behind them," Johnson said. "We tried to play Alicia (Brock) in behind them, but the timing wasn't always there."
Despite being outshot 21-14, IUPUI enjoyed a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks with all nine corners coming in the second half. The more physical Southern Utah (3-8-2, 1-2-1 Summit) squad was whistled for 18 fouls while the Jags were whistled for just two.
Senior defender
Stephanie Hoffman led the Jaguars with four shot attempts and
Katrina McCrory and
Alicia Brock tried three each.
IUPUI's Summit League slate will continue next weekend when they host both North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The Jags will play the Bison on Friday night at Kuntz Stadium at 7:00 p.m..
