VALPARAISO, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer saw a fortuitous bounce go in favor of homestanding Valparaiso in the 103rd minute on Friday night as the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 double overtime decision at Brown Field. VU's Kendall Brown put an unassisted goal past IUPUI goalkeeper Jamie Farrell to account for the day's scoring.

IUPUI junior Stephanie Hoffman attempted to clear a ball out of the defensive third, but had the ball deflect high into the air. Brown was able to settle the ball and drill a shot from 25 yards out for her first score of the year.

"It was really just a lucky, or unlucky bounce," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "She hit a heckuva a shot, don't get me wrong, but it shouldn't have come down to that."

Despite being outshot 14-12 on the day, IUPUI (1-3) had its share of scoring chances against a former league foe.

Freshman Alicia Brock had the best look of the day when she got loose behind the Valpo (3-1) defenders on a breakaway in the 20th minute. After beating the defenders, Brock hit her shot into the stomach of a sliding Mele Cabral, who had come off her back line to challenge the play.

Junior Leslie Walker and sophomore Amanda Snyder also factored in the attack, creating opportunities, but were unable to crack the VU defense. Brock and Hoffman led IUPUI with three shots apiece and freshman Alex Baer tried two.

"I thought Alex Baer played her best game yet," Johnson said. "She did a good job of creating and was probably the most dangerous she's been since coming here. Overall, we just need to find a way to get some goals.

"I thought we got some good stuff from Karin Demo and Lauren Gallets off the bench. Our play didn't drop off when we went to the bench today."

Defensively the Jaguars were without sophomore back Kelly Williams, which forced Margaret Allgeier and Lindsey Warfield into the back four.

"I thought the back line did a nice job together," Johnson said. "They did a good job of keeping stuff in front of them. Most of their shots came from 30 or 35 yards out."

Farrell made three saves and lowered her goals against average to 1.21 on the season.

The Jaguars season-opening string of five road games will conclude next Sunday at Northern Iowa at noon. From there, the Jags will enjoy four straight matches at Kuntz Stadium in a nine-day stretch, including the start of Summit League play.
