INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team yielded a late goal and was unable to muster much offensively as the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 Summit League decision to South Dakota State on Friday night at Kuntz Stadium. The match was the league opener for both teams.

SDSU's Kelsey Ferguson scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute, discarding an otherwise strong defensive effort from junior goalkeeper Jamie Farrell and her teammates.

"Jamie made a lot of saves that kept us in the game out there," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "She does a great for us. She made a great save on a corner kick for us and bounced up and made another stop.

"She saved us a few different times tonight."

However, a moment of indecision allowed Ferguson to get loose for her third goal of the year and account for all of the game's scoring. SDSU's (5-3-0, 1-0 Summit) Cori Bonte played a long through ball to Ferguson, who was on a dead sprint up the middle of the field. Farrell was unable to beat Ferguson to the ball as the SDSU forward chipped a shot over the IUPUI goalkeeper into the open net.

It capped a night in which SDSU outshot IUPUI (3-5-0, 0-1-0 Summit) 13-9 overall and 7-2 on frame. Defensively, the Jackrabbits limited IUPUI freshman Alicia Brock, who ranks among The Summit League leaders in shots per game, to just one attempt.

"I think Alicia was setting up too far in front of them and they did a good job of keeping numbers behind her," Johnson said. "When she did get the ball, she was having to go through four or five defenders at a time."

Sophomore midfielder Natalie Holland led IUPUI with three shots and junior tri-captain Katrina McCrory tried two. Holland had one of IUPUI's best looks of the match when she got the ball on her laces amongst a scrum inside the right edge of the box, but had the shot knocked down before it got to goal.

Ferguson led all players with six shots, four of which were on frame.

Farrell recorded a season-high six saves while SDSU goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso made two saves in the shutout.

IUPUI's four-game homestand comes to a close on Sunday when the Jags play host to North Dakota State in a Summit League showdown. As part of a 'Two for Two' Sunday, fans can come check out both the women's match with NDSU and the men's match with Centenary College for just $2. Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag.

The women's match will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the men will begin at 1:15 p.m..
