TULSA, Okla. -- The IUPUI women's tennis team picked up their first Summit League win of the year with a 5-2 victory over Centenary Friday morning at the Grand Racquet Club. The win was also the first in head coach Cameron Benjamin's tenure at IUPUI.
The Jaguars took the doubles point in just two matches, with
Andrea Burkhardt and
Emily Holsapple winning 8-0 at No. 2, while
Dana Gardner and
Lisa Gebhard recorded their first career doubles win with an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
Leading by a point, IUPUI took four of six singles matches, with Allison Thompson winning in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2.
Vanessa Carna tallied the win at No. 3, never dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 romp.
Gardner and Gebhard both picked up their first singles wins of the spring in victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the win for the Jags.
Playing two matches in the same day caught up with IUPUI against Western Illinois, as the Jags couldn't grab a point in a 4-0 loss to the Westerwinds. The Jaguars had a chance to grab the doubles points following an 8-4 win by Thompson and Carna, but Gardner and Gebhard narrowly fell, 9-7, at No. 3 to give WIU the early doubles point.
In singles, the Westerwinds won at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to wrap up the match.
On Saturday morning, IUPUI wrapped up their cluster with a 4-1 loss to Southern Utah. After the Jaguars dropped the doubles point with two losses, Carna picked up a win when her opponent retired with injury. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, they could not pick up any more ground, finishing the cluster with a 1-3 conference mark.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday, March 29, when they travel to Marion, Ind., to take on Indiana Wesleyan. The match will begin at 11:00 a.m.
