MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team's record breaking 2008 campaign came to an abrupt end on Friday afternoon as the Jaguars dropped a 2-1 decision to South Dakota State at John A. MacKenzie Field in the Summit League Tournament Semifinals. The Jackrabbits scored in the 38th minute and added the eventual game-winner in the 49th minute.
SDSU (13-4-1), which allowed just two regular season goals to league foes this year, saw the Jaguars cut the lead in half in the 54th minute when First Team All-Summit midfielder
Katrina McCrory netted her seventh score of the season on a penalty kick.
"We made two mistakes and they capitalized on it," Summit League Coach of the Year
Chris Johnson said. "I thought we played really well up until that point, going into the wind. I honestly felt that if we got to halftime 0-0, I really liked our chances. I've got to believe that we lost to the best team."
However, IUPUI (13-7) was unable to pull any closer as the Jaguars attack was limited to just nine shots, three of which were on frame. McCrory led IUPUI with four of the team's nine shots, putting two on goal.
The defeat snapped the Jags' school record six-game winning streak.
SDSU's Emily Quigley put the Jacks on the scoreboard with 7:06 left in the first half when she took a pass from Danni Healey and laced her first goal of the year past IUPUI junior goalkeeper
Jamie Farrell. Just over three minutes into the second half, Erin Kasmarik received a cross from Kellyn Farrell and headed a shot off the post and past IUPUI's Farrell for her seventh tally of the season.
Five minutes later,
Alicia Brock, The Summit League Newcomer of the Year, was pulled down inside the 18-yard box, drawing the McCrory penalty kick. McCrory's goal was the 12th of her career.
"They pounded on Alicia all day today," Johnson said. "We had some decent shots and some good runs in the box. The difference was they had nine seniors on the field and we had six freshmen out there, and it showed at the end."
Continuing to push the pace in desparation, the Jags totaled five of their nine shots over the final 30 minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer against The Summit's most stout defense.
Farrell recorded six saves in the loss and the defensive backfield capped the season as it started, giving another solid effort in front of the junior goalkeeper.
"
Kelly Williams and
Natalie Holland did a great job out there," Johnson said. "Margaret (Allgeier) played well too."
Despite the loss, the Jaguars finished the 2008 campaign with a share of its first-ever Summit League regular season title and a bevy of program records. Johnson's team racked up an impressive 13 wins, eclipsing the previous record by three victories. In addition, the eight shutouts posted a new school record.
"The girls are down right now," Johnson said. "But there's nothing to be down about as far as the year's concerned. We're not far off."
Johnson's team loses just one senior -
Lindsey Warfield - from this year's squad. A three-year starter at both defender and in the midfield, Warfield made 60 appearances and 47 starts for the Jaguars during her four-year career.
