TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI women's soccer team celebrated Halloween in style on Friday by collecting a 3-1 Summit League win over Oral Roberts. The win was the Jaguars' first-ever victory in Tulsa and matched the program's longest winning streak ever with its fifth straight triumph.
IUPUI has now won nine of its past 10 matches and improved to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in The Summit League. Oral Roberts fell to 5-10-1 overall and 2-5 in league play.
"Overall, it was a good team win," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "After a slow start, we were able to get going and put some balls in the back of the net and our defense hung in there and got us the win."
IUPUI freshmen
Alicia Brock and
Megan Hock and junior defender
Stephanie Hoffman all scored in the victory as the Jaguars have now outscored the opposition 28-15 this year.
Brock put the Jags on the scoreboard in the 19th minute after she was able to settle a
Jamie Farrell punt that covered over half the field. IUPUI's scoring leader got the ball to her feet and beat ORU goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler for her eighth score of the year.
Twenty-seven seconds later, ORU's Natalya Manyan tied the score with her eighth goal of the season when she got a shot past Farrell.
"Their forwards can flat out fly," Johnson said. "I've got to believe they've got world class speed up top. We had a hard time staying in front of them."
IUPUI was lucky to remain tied at halftime as the Golden Eagles' Samantha Faron hit a crossbar in the 41st minute, but the Jaguars found the magic potion both offensively and defensively in the locker room.
Hock netted her second game-winning goal in as many games in the 51st minute, tallying for the seventh time in her rookie campaign. Less than six minutes later, Hoffman scored for the first time this season off an assist from junior
Katrina McCrory. McCrory sent a free kick into the box where Hoffman was able to knock the ball past Wheeler for her second career score.
It was McCrory's third assist of the season, pulling her into a tie for the team lead. Johnson credited his team's second half success to the play of sophomore
Natalie Holland in the midfield.
"Natalie Holland came in off the bench and did a great job of challenging for ball and winning balls in the middle of the 4-4-2," Johnson said. "Kat's not one to win a lot of balls in there, but Natalie came in and kind of turned the tides for us."
Farrell made four saves in net and benefited from Hoffman clearing a ball off the back line to record her 12th win of the season. Wheeler made five stops for ORU.
The Golden Eagles outshot IUPUI 14-11 and had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Manyan attempted a game-high six shots as Brock, Hock and
Lauren Gallets had two each for IUPUI.
IUPUI returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Shreveport, La. to take on Centenary in its regular season finale. Kickoff has been moved up to 11:00 a.m. to accomodate the Jaguars' flight schedule.
