JAGUAR SWIMMERS SHOW WELL VERSUS CENTRE, BUTLER

Results

INDIANAPOLIS -- The IUPUI swimming and diving teams hosted Centre (Ky.) College and Butler University on Friday night at the IU Natatorium, with the Jaguar men beating Centre, 150-141. The IUPUI women had split results, defeating Butler, 110-28, and falling to Centre, 89.49.

One the men's side of the pool, Michael Steurer and Craig Noakes each recorded impressive performances in sweeping the backstroke and breaststroke events.  Steurer took honors in the 100 and 200 backstroke, winning in 55.56 and 1:59.96, respectively.  Noakes won the 100 breast in 1:02.53 and took the 200 in 2:17.64.

In both the 100 and 200 breast, Noakes was followed by freshman Andrew Heideman, who took second with times of and 1:03.31 and 2:21.41, respectively.

Jaron Tuttle put together his best diving performance of the year to help the Jaguars pick up critical points, posting a 293.05 on the 1-meter board and following it up with a 352.55 on the 3-meter.  The 3-meter score was the second-best score over six dives in school history.

Tyler McGowan, coming off a week in which he was honored as The Summit League Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week, swam the sixth-quickest 200 butterfly in school history, winning the event in 1:56.92.  The junior also captured the 500 freestyle in 4:49.86 and swam the anchor on the victorious 400 freestyle relay team that clinched the win for the Jags.

McGowan teamed with Steven Zoss, Ben Smith and John Hudson to hit the wall in 3:19.92, ahead of their competition by 1.46.

On the women's side, Chen Ni and Elizabeth Scott continued to form a dynamic 1-2 combination for the Jaguars, taking honors to help the Jaguars breeze by Butler.  Ni scored a 262.60 on the 1-meter board, setting a new school record, while Scott was close behind with a mark of 224.15.  On the 3-meter board, Ni's score of 278.30 was the third-bes in IUPUI women's diving history; Scott's 258.90 was the fifth-best.

In the pool, Carrie Ford picked up the first win by an IUPUI women's swimmer, touching the wall first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:12.30, winning by nearly 9 seconds.  Ford followed up her win with a second place finish in the 500 freestyle,  touching in 5:35.24.

Alexandra McCreight was the only other individual winner for the Jaguars, winning the 200 butterfly in 2:14.58.  McCreight took third in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:21.68 to be IUPUI's highest finisher in the event.

The Jaguars will return to competition on Saturday, October 18, when they head north on I-65 to compete in the Indiana Intercollegiate meet at Purdue University.  The meet will begin at 12:00 p.m.
