INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team looks for its third straight win on Thursday night when it plays host to Southern Utah (5-15, 3-6 Summit). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST from The Jungle and pregame coverage begins on Freedom 95.9 FM at 6:30 p.m.. Greg Rakestraw (pbp) will describe all the sights and sounds on the broadcast.
The game is also available as part of the SummitTV package as Scott McCauley (pbp) and Kerry Vick (color) will call the game.
IUPUI (15-5, 7-2), led by reigning Summit League Player of the Week
George Hill, are amidst a season-long four-game home stand. The Jaguars swept through Oakland and IPFW last week, thanks to Hill's 25.0 points and 6.0 assists per game. As a team, IUPUI shot a combined 60.4 percent from the field in the two wins. Hill, the conference's Preseason Player of the Year, became IUPUI's career scoring leader at the Division I level in the process, passing Brandon Cole for the top spot. He enters Thursday with 1,348 career points.
With the two victories, the Jaguars ran their home winning streak to 11-in-a-row, dating back to last season.
This season, IUPUI has made a name as one of the nation's best shooting teams. Entering this week, IUPUI ranks second in foul shooting (78.8 percent), seventh in field goal shooting (50.0) and tenth in three-point field goal percentage (41.3). Junior
Gary Patterson ranks 34th nationally by hitting 43.9 percent from three-point range, while sophomore
Jon Avery has been on a tear offensively as well.
The 6-foot-7 forward was a perfect 8-of-8 in last Thursday's win over Oakland and is shooting 64.7 percent from the floor this season.
Southern Utah, under first-year head coach Roger Reid, is led by former JUCO All-American forward Geoff Payne. The 6-foot-7 Payne comes in averaging 20.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. Four other T-Birds average between six and nine points a night for Reid's club.
