INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team was blanked for the second straight game and saw Evansville get an early goal in a 1-0 loss to the Purple Aces at Kuntz Stadium on Sunday afternoon. UE's Mia Tofano scored the game-winner in the fifth minute off an assist from Heidi Grey.
Both teams had 13 shots and six on goal.
"We're executing fine until the point when we get in the box," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "At some point, someone has to put the ball in the back of the net."
The IUPUI offense surged out of the gates, getting three clean looks in the opening three minutes of the match. Senior Angie Pilat was able to roll a cross through the six-yard box on the opening possession, but nobody was able to finish the play.
UE (7-2-1) used a quick counter to get the game's first goal. Grey threaded a short lead pass to a sprinting Tofano, who caught IUPUI goalkeeper Jamie Farrell off her back line.
Tofano was able to angle a shot just out of Farrell's reach for her second score of the year.
The Purple Aces nearly made it 2-0 before halftime when Taylor Tomanka got loose for a breakaway opportunity with Farrell, thanks to a long counter attack. Farrell took advantage of a poor touch by Tomanka to cover the ball before she allowed an attempt on goal.
The Jaguars (1-7-1) used a stiff tailwind in the second half to keep the heat on and the ball in Evansville territory. The game came to a frenetic close, thanks to a drive from junior Lindsey Warfield. Warfield drilled a shot from nearly 35 yards out that bounced in front of UE goalkeeper Theresa Bagby. Bagby had to retreat to her end line to punch the ball off the crossbar to preserve the shutout with her sixth and final save.
The ensuing corner kick was knocked out by an Evansville defender, giving the Jags one last try. Sophomore Lisa Kruse lofted the last corner into the box with seven seconds left, but Bagby was able to corral the ball along the end line as time expired.
IUPUI had a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks while freshman Cara Hartman led the Jags with three shots.
"We're playing better soccer now than we were three weeks ago," Johnson said. "And we've only given up one goal in each of the past three games. Unfortunately, you can't win if you don't score."
Farrell gave another strong effort, making five saves on the afternoon.
IUPUI concludes its three-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Detroit at Kuntz Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m..
