MEN'S SOCCER TEAM CAN'T FIND PAY DIRT IN 1-0 LOSS TO MISSOURI STATE

9/29/2007 11:11:12 AM

PEORIA, Ill. - Despite an aggressive offensive approach that led to an 18-12 shot advantage, the IUPUI men's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to Missouri State at the Busey/Bradley Homecoming Classic on Saturday evening at Shea Stadium. Freshman Weston Hawkins led IUPUI with five shots, including three on goal.

"We wanted to start each session a little more aggressively and we wanted to make better decisions on the ball," IUPUI head coach Steve Franklin said. "We controlled the tempo, it was just one of those nights where we did everything but put the ball in the back of the net."

Missouri State's Kyle Windmueller scored the game-winner with 19:51 left in regulation off an assist from Henry Lawrence, III. On a restart, Lawrence sent the ball into the IUPUI six yard box where Windmueller emerged from a scrum and poked a shot past junior goalkeeper David Barszczowski for his third tally of the season.

"Dave played another good game in goal, but there was nothing he could do on the goal," Franklin said. "It was reminiscent of the goal against Western (Illinois) last year at the conference tournament."

After an early Missouri State (4-5-1) corner kick to start the match, IUPUI began to push the pace, forcing keeper Lance Parker to face five shots in an eight minute span. To start the second half, IUPUI (2-7-1) put four shots on goal in the opening 11 minutes, but saw Parker make all four saves.

Hawkins played a key role in IUPUI's attack as he moved to the midfield from his customary outside back position. Junior Ryan Brumbaugh got a rare start in the defensive backfield and put together a strong 90 minute effort.

Brumbaugh and senior Adrian Conrad were picked to the 11-man All-Tournament team.

Parker finished with nine stops while Barszczowski had two saves for the Jags. Parker, who helped Missouri State to the tournament title, was chosen as the event's MVP.

"I was happy with how our guys played and how they were able to bounce back from a tough mach less than 24 hours ago," Franklin said. "Now we need to regroup and come home and take care of business."

The Jaguars will host NAIA Marian College on Thursday, Oct. 4 at Kuntz Stadium with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.. Like always, IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag.
