YPSILANTI, Mich. - The IUPUI women's soccer team got a monster effort from sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Farrell and a fortunate goal from senior Sheri Levack in a 1-1 tie with Eastern Michigan at Scicluna Field on Sunday.
Farrell stopped a career-high 17 shots, marking the second highest single-match total in school history. Offensively, Levack scored for the second time in as many matches to provide IUPUI will all of its offensive output.
"Jamie made three potential game saving saves," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "They were dangerous on corners all day, and Jamie just put herself in the right spots all day."
Farrell made 10 of her 17 stops in the first half, while Levack took advantage of the Jaguars lone shot attempt in the first 45 minutes. Redshirt freshman Danielle Clark lofted a ball from near midfield into the box, that EMU goalkeeper Maggie Manville mishandled.
Levack found herself in the right place at the right time to put home her second goal of the season in the game's 34th minute, as IUPUI held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Farrell came up with one of her key defensive plays in the 49th minute, stopping a Katie Lozar penalty kick that was granted after she was pulled down by the IUPUI goalkeeper on a breakaway.
The lead stood until the 57th minute when Stephanie Janssens flared a corner kick to Sara Schiffbauer, who headed a shot just out of Farrell's reach for the equalizer.
IUPUI narrowly missed regaining the lead in the second half on two occasions. The first came when Stephanie Hoffman got a header past Manville, but an EMU (2-3-2) defender cleared before it could get over the end line. Then, in the first overtime, Levack had a shot hit off the post that would have won it.
Despite being outshot 24-11 on the day, the Jags (1-5-1) outshot Eastern 4-3 in the two overtime periods.
"They took a fair number of what I would call, highly optimistic shots from range," Johnson said. "There was a lot of play in the midfield from both sides."
The tie helped IUPUI improve to 1-5-2 all-time against the Eagles. It also capped a weekend in which the Jaguars picked up a win and a draw.
"We're getting there," Johnson said. "Today, once we got past 15 minutes, we played better. We just need to get a little more consistency from some freshmen.
"But it was a good weekend - I'm happy with that."
IUPUI now returns home to open Summit League play with Oakland University on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium. IUPUI students are admitted for free with a valid JagTag.
