DeKALB, Ill. - Navy scored three first half goals, including one 74 seconds into the match, in a 3-0 win over IUPUI at the Northern Illinois Invitational on Sunday. IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Farrell collected 11 saves in defeat.
Brigitte Fox scored for the second time in as many matches, making it 1-0 off an assist from Brittany White. From there, the IUPUI defense buckled down and the midfield helped retain possession in a see-saw affair.
"Despite the score, we were able to play with them," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "It was a much better soccer game than on Friday. Our passing was a little cleaner and we were able to build some offense.
"Our backs helped us get into our offense and I thought we did some good things today."
Navy's Jen Grijalva scored with just under 15 minutes left in the half, while Christine Calderon added the final insurance with exactly three minutes left before halftime.
Navy (1-0-1) outshot IUPUI 18-3, including 11-3 on net.
Senior Angie Pilat attempted two of IUPUI's three shots, while Johnson praised Leslie Walker for her front running presence.
"Leslie was dangerous in the attack," Johnson said. "I was pleased with some of the things we were able to do on offense."
Navy's Lizzie Barnes made two saves in the first half, while Beth Reed handled her lone opportunity in the second half.
Farrell made eight of her 11 saves in the first half, falling just one shy of her career-high. Navy played Iowa to a 1-1 tie two days earlier and is coming off a 20-win season in 2006.
"This weekend was a good test for us," Johnson said. "We feel like Navy is better than any team we're going to face in the conference, and we were able to play with them. We just need to build off of that."
IUPUI will kickoff its home slate next Sunday when it hosts former conference foe Valparaiso at Kuntz Stadium, located at 1502 W. 16th St.. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and IUPUI students are admitted for free, with a valid JagTag.
