TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team was blanked for the fifth straight time to open the season on Wednesday, dropping a 2-0 decision at Indiana State at the ISU Soccer Complex. ISU's Lauren Podolski scored two second half goals to account for all of the game's offense.
The Jaguars were outshot by an 18-9 count while freshman Amanda Snyder led the team with a season-high three shots off the bench. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Farrell matched her career-high with 12 saves.
It marked her third double-digit save effort in five matches this season.
Podolski scored the game-winner in the 54th minute when she flared a shot from nearly 35 yards out over the head of Farrell, who got caught off her back line. She added some insurance with just under nine minutes left when she got in behind the defense off an assist from goalkeeper Rachel Rudzis. Rudzis chipped a ball over the IUPUI midfielders to set up the breakaway opportunity.
Podolski led all players with six shot attempts as a reserve.
IUPUI (0-5-0) had some early chances, but was unable to capitalize.
Junior #J.J. King# got free inside the ISU (3-5-0) box in the game's second minute, but saw her shot sail high of the crossbar. The Jags kept the heat on as sophomore Katrina McCrory missed high of the net in the 17th minute.
Later, Stephanie Hoffman had a header bound off the crossbar and a subsequent rebound attempt was blocked. A third attempt missed wide of the net to squander another scoring chance.
"We just didn't get it done," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "The good thing is, we cleared the bench and the play didn't drop off.
"We changed some things up and went with a 3-4-3 and moved some people around, we just didn't get the job done today."
In all, Johnson used 20 different players, 15 of which are underclassmen.
IUPUI returns to action on Friday when they travel to Youngstown State for a non-conference tilt. From there, the Jags will face Eastern Michigan on Sunday.
"The good news is, we play again in two days," Johnson said. "Right now, we're just not the team I thought we would be. We've got some time to get it right, but it needs to happen soon."
