MEN'S SOCCER TEAM RESTS SOME LEGS BUT DROPS 2-0 DECISION AT EIU

9/19/2007 10:59:42 AM

CHARLESTON, Ill. - A banged up IUPUI men's soccer team lost a 2-0 match at Eastern Illinois in its final preparations for Summit League play. The Jaguars were outshot 24-7 and managed to put just one attempt on net in the loss.

Senior Adrian Conrad led the IUPUI (1-5-1) attack with three tries in defeat.

EIU's Adam Gartner assisted on both of the game's goals - a short header by Brad Earl in the 32nd minute and a tap in from Alex Harrison in the 61st minute. Both Eastern Illinois (5-1-1) goals came on restarts.

On the eventual game-winner, Gartner bent the restart to Gartner, who headed a shot past Peter Brasovan from just beyond the six-yard box. On the second goal, Brasovan lost the handle on the ball, allowing Harrison to toe poke a shot from point blank for some insurance.

"It really took the wind out of our sails," IUPUI head coach Steve Franklin said. "It's disappointing, because we really controlled play for the first 30 minutes.

"That's been our calling card so far - dominate for the first 30 minutes and then follow that up with a very average 30 minutes. We haven't really put a complete game together yet."

IUPUI's best chance of the day came late in the first half when Conrad took a shot from the right side of the box, forcing EIU goalkeeper Mark Hansen to make a diving stop to push the ball wide of the post.

With just over 20 minutes left, redshirt freshman Tyler Brumbaugh saw his header attempt fly just over the crossbar while Conrad missed high with a drive with just over seven minutes left.

EIU's Brad Peters had a game-high five shot attempts while Harrison tried four.

Brasovan finished the match with six stops, including a dazzling sliding save midway through the first half on a Harrison try from the right flank.

Franklin opted to rest several regulars, including four starters.

IUPUI will now open Summit League play at Centenary on Sunday with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m.. The Jags are 2-2-1 all-time against the Gents and 0-1-1 in the two previous meetings in Shreveport.

"We need to find a way to get a positive result at Centenary."
