CINCINNATI - Two days after giving a strong showing and knocking off Western Michigan, the IUPUI men's soccer team produced a lackluster performance on Sunday. The end result was a 5-0 loss at Xavier as the Jags were outshot 26-9 on the afternoon.
Xavier's Brandon Bucher scored twice on the day, while El-Hadji Dieng had a goal and an assist.
"No discredit to Xavier, but they're not five goals better than us," IUPUI head coach Steve Franklin said. "We just laid down, absolutely laid down."
IUPUI (1-4-1) played Xavier evenly for much of the first half as both teams had attempted six shots midway through the period. XU (3-3-0) broke through with 7:19 left in the half when Jon Enders scored off an assist from Dieng on a restart.
Just over four minutes later, Bucher beat IUPUI goalkeeper Peter Brasovan after he got free inside the box for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Musketeers kept the heat on early in the second half, forcing Brasovan to make four saves in the opening 15 minutes. Dieng added insurance with just under 20 minutes left when he roped a shot off the crossbar and into the left-hand corner of the net.
Xavier added two late goals against junior goalkeeper Mike Rietveld to complete the final tally.
Dieng led the Xavier attack with six shots, while sophomore Eric Weigman led the Jaguars with three attempts.
IUPUI has one remaining non-conference tune-up before Summit League play begins versus Centenary next Sunday.
"We need to find an identity by next Sunday," Franklin said. "People getting opportunities that need to step up, aren't producing right now.
"We really need to play with a little more pride."
The Jaguars will travel to Eastern Illinois on Wednesday before heading to Centenary on Sunday. Wednesday's kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. in Charleston.
