MUNCIE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision in exhibition play at Ball State on Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars played 19 different players and were only outshot 17-9 by the Great Lakes Region's No. 13 ranked squad.
"Even though they dominated the scoreboard, we were very competitive," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "It was just a matter of us playing a lot of new kids and making some new kid mistakes.
"At one point, we had seven freshmen and a transfer on the field together. I will say, we are much deeper and more athletic now than we were at this point last season. Now it's a matter of just putting it together and executing."
On Saturday, it was Ball State that was executing as two different Cardinals had multi-goal games and Sarah Schumacker enjoyed a five point effort. Lindsay Martin staked the hosts to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the 13th and 34th minutes against IUPUI goalkeeper Jamie Farrell.
Ball State made it 3-0 before halftime as Schumacker beat Farrell in a breakaway opportunity with 5:14 left in the first half. The Cards scored three goals in a 10 minute stretch in the second half to cap the scoring in the lopsided victory.
IUPUI had chances to break up the shutout, but was unable to find the back of the net. In the 61st minute, freshman Stacy Levack had a breakaway opportunity against BSU backup goalkeeper Amy Cleeter, but pushed her shot just wide of the post.
In the waning moments, fellow freshman Cara Hartman got free just inside the 18-yard box, but chipped her shot harmlessly over the crossbar.
Johnson praised the efforts of front running trio Levack, Angie Pilat and Memphis-transfer Leslie Walker.
"Leslie (Walker) played the entire first 45, and was one of our more dangerous players on the field," Johnson said. "She did a lot of good stuff up top, and we're going to try and work her more with (Angie) Pilat and Stacy Levack.
"Ball State's a good team and a great test for us. We're going to come back and work on some things and hopefully be ready for Eastern Illinois next weekend."
Farrell made five stops in goal for the Jags, while the BSU keepers needed two stops.
IUPUI returns to action next Saturday at Eastern Illinois at 4:00 p.m..
