INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team advanced to the Summit League (formerly Mid-Continent Conference) championship game for the first time since 2001 by virtue of a 2-0 win over Oral Roberts on Friday afternoon at Kuntz Stadium.
The Jaguars will now face top seeded Oakland University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the Summit League crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
IUPUI's Second Team All-Summit tandem of senior
Chris Wey and
Eric Weigman hooked up for the game-winner in the 67th minute, while senior
Vangel Nacovski later struck with a patented restart.
Wey juked his defender just inside the left edge of the 18-yard box before whipping a cross to the far post. The 5-foot-9 Weigman climbed over the defense to head a shot just inside the right post for his fifth score of the season. It was his first game-winner of the season and helped IUPUI (8-10-1) remain a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
"Just before that, (Wey) played a ball to the back post and nobody was there," Weigman said. "So when the same opportunity came up, no one was marking me and I was able to get on the ball.
"I tried to remember what we practice - the basic fundamentals of heading a ball like squaring your shoulders and snapping your neck. I was just happy to get it on goal."
ORU (7-11-0) goalkeeper Andrew Techanchuk got a hand on the attempt but couldn't keep it out of the net.
"Wiggy got up about as high as Wiggy can get up," IUPUI head coach Steve Franklin said. "It was a great goal. And you have to credit Chris Wey. He didn't exactly have the greatest first half, but he kept playing.
"You have to keep riding the horses that got you there, and Chris stuck with it today."
Just under nine minutes later, Nacovski, the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, struck for his ninth score of the season. The 5-foot-11 midfielder drilled a free kick from over 30 yards out just inside the right post, amidst a scrum inside the six-yard box.
"You've got to give credit to the maestro," Franklin said. "He steps up and hits a great free kick for a goal. He really gave a gutty performance, because he's not 100 percent."
IUPUI's second half offensive surge punctuated a match of give-and-take from the opening kickoff.
"It was kind of like a classic Ali-Frazier fight," Franklin said. "Both teams would throw a couple punches to see how the other would react.
"I credit (ORU head coach) Steve Hayes. They made us adjust and play inside-out in the second half."
The Golden Eagles outshot the Jaguars 14-12 overall and 6-4 on net. IUPUI junior goalkeeper
David Barszczowski made six saves in his third career shutout, moving his record to 7-3-1 on the year. Techanchuk made two stops for ORU.
Oral Roberts had two long flares hit crossbars, keeping Barszczowski's shutout intact. The first came in the 62nd minute when Niger Portillo had a long cross glance off the pipe, while Gary Duran hit one with just under three minutes left.
Both IUPUI and Oakland are vying for an NCAA Tournament appearance on Sunday. Tickets will be available on game day for $7 apiece.
"We're excited to be back in the championship game," Franklin said. "It should be fun."
No. 1 Oakland 2, No. 4 UMKC 1
UMKC gave top seeded Oakland a scare in game one before falling 2-1 at Kuntz. OU's Piotr Nowak gave the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead right before halftime as he and Summit League Newcomer of the Year Martin Sandell converted a two-on-two breakaway.
Sandell dropped the ball off to Nowak, who's shot hit the crossbar and deflected straight down, just beyond the end line.
UMKC knotted the match in the 64th minute when Chris Markey scored on a John Bayron Sosa assist. Bayron Sosa sent a restart into the box where Markey flicked a shot past OU goalkeeper Steve Clark.
Stefan St. Louis notched the game-winner with an angled shot just inside the right post, set up by John MacKenzie's rolling crossing pass. It was St. Louis' second score of the season.
