FOUR SECOND HALF GOALS PUSH JAGS PAST IPFW, 4-0

10/19/2007 10:08:29 AM

INDIANAPOLIS - Something about Senior Night brings out the best in the IUPUI women's soccer team. After a sluggish opening half, the Jaguars powered home four second half goals en route to a 4-0 Summit League win over IPFW at Kuntz Stadium on Friday night.

Senior Angie Pilat scored twice while fellow senior Sheri Levack had a goal and two assists in the victory, The four goals marked a season-best while the win was the first-ever over IPFW in six tries.

The Jaguars broke a scoreless tie with just 22 minutes left and promptly put the game out of reach.

Pilat struck first, taking a short pass from Levack before launching a missile into the upper right-hand corner of the net past IPFW's Malinda Holmer. Twenty-one seconds later, Levack scored one of her own.

Just a day after her 22nd birthday, Levack took a short lead pass from Katrina McCrory and rolled a diagonal shot in front of Holmer inside the left post for her third score of the year.

Just over three minutes later, Levack and Pilat hooked up again. This time, Levack put a shot on net, forcing Holmer to make an impressive diving save. The rebound came to Pilat, who knocked a shot into the open net from the top of the 18-yard box to cap her second career multi-goal game.

"It felt like it was back in the old days," Levack said of she and her former club teammate's play up top. "Me and Pilat have talked about it and we knew it was just a matter of time."

Head coach Chris Johnson knew his senior duo had it in them.

"At various times this season, we've had them up top together," Johnson said of Levack and Pilat. "And if we could've kept them up top together all four years, they may have even bigger numbers.

"We've needed to use Sheri all over the field and she's always been up to the task. She's been such an invaluable asset that we've needed her in the midfield and up top."

Sophomore Stephanie Hoffman capped the scoring with 5:36 left when her header off a Courtney Roberts corner kick beat Holmer to the near post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Farrell notched her fifth career shutout, pulling even with former standout Jessie Mann for the program's all-time lead. Farrell needed just four saves and was the beneficiary of some good breaks in the victory.

With the score tied at 0-0, IPFW's Danielle Orlandella broke free, working just inside the right edge of the box. Farrell challenged off her back line, but was beaten by the fleet IPFW forward. Given a tough angle to work with, Orlandella missed the open net, having her shot fly harmlessly into the outer right side of the goal.

IUPUI outshot IPFW 23-8 overall and 15-6 in the second half. Levack had a pointed message for her teammates at halftime.

"I just said it's now or never," Levack said. "We needed this game and needed to put it all out on the field."

IUPUI steps out of conference play on Tuesday when the Jaguars head to Butler in a rivalry match. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. from Butler's Varsity Field.
