FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team's recent string of ties continued on Sunday afternoon at IPFW as the match ended at 0-0. The Jags have now tied in their past four matches and have a school record five draws on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jessie Mann had five stops in goal for the Jags, including a clutch save on a header early in the first overtime. Since head coach Chris Johnson took over in 2003, his teams are 3-0-9 in overtime matches.
"The kids played hard for 110 minutes," Johnson said. "We didn't come out as sharp as we should have, but we played well in the second half."
On Sunday, opting to rest some of his major contributors, including defender April Osborn, Johnson's squad was outshot 24-16 overall and 10-8 on net.
IUPUI (5-4-5) had to endure a late flurry in regulation, and also dodge a bullet in overtime to escape with its sixth shutout of the season.
"Jessie Mann and Jamie (Farrell) both did a nice job in goal," Johnson said. "I thought Lindsey Warfield came in off the bench and gave us some good minutes in both halves and in overtime."
With under four minutes remaining, Kristy Arnett tested Mann with a shot on a restart, that the IUPUI keeper made the save on. On the rebound, Ashley Hansbury put another look on goal, that was cleared off by an IUPUI defender.
With just 16 seconds left, Hansbury hit a post as well.
The overtime began with Mann making a save on an Anika Apar, while the match ended with an equally dangerous IPFW (3-7-1) opportunity. Apar hit a crossbar in the 107th minute, sending the rebound straight into the ground. Hansbury rushed in with a header, but Mann cut off her angle, and the ball to cap the shutout.
Offensively, senior Stacy Downing was IUPUI's most dangerous threat, putting four of her team-high five shots on net. Junior Angie Pilat also had three tries.
Apar and Hansbury led IPFW with five shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Farrell got the start in goal for the Jags and recorded four saves before giving way to Mann at halftime. IPFW goalkeeper Shannon Lynn made eight stops for the 'Dons.
IUPUI returns to action next Saturday when they host Western Illinois at Kuntz Stadium. The Jags will honor its seniors prior to the match, set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m..
