INDIANAPOLIS - As much as IUPUI women's soccer coach Chris Johnson wanted the current streak of four straight ties snapped, he could have done without Saturday night's result. His Jaguars dropped a 1-0 contest to Western Illinois at Kuntz Stadium, further jumbling the already dicey Mid-Continent Conference standings.

Western Illinois controlled the play for most of the night, outshooting IUPUI 19-8 and taking nine corner kicks and allowing the Jags just one.

"The first half of the last three games and most of the game tonight - we're just not playing our best soccer," Johnson said. "At times we're sleep walking through it. We're just not putting 11 people on the field that are getting the job done for 90 minutes.

"We're better than this, I know that."

IUPUI's (5-5-5, 1-1-2 Mid-Con) best scoring opportunity came early in the match when junior Sheri Levack got loose behind the Western Illinois (9-6-0, 2-2-0 Mid-Con) defense. Levack got the ball on her right foot, but sent her shot right at WIU goalkeeper Samantha Clark, who made the easy save.

Western Illinois scored the game-winner in the 39th minute after continuing to dominate the run of play. Fresh off the bench, WIU's Katelyn Wisner found herself along the endline with the ball at her feet on the right side of the net. Wisner sent a short square ball to Misako Inaba, who sent a shot to the far post past IUPUI freshman goalkeeper Jamie Farrell for her third tally of the season.

The Westerwinds kept the heat on all night, forcing Farrell to make three saves in each half. Clark collected three saves in the shutout for WIU.

"We did a good job keeping them out of the net except for the one lapse," Johnson said. "The kid basically stepped off the bench and we took a nap on the play."

Inaba led all players with six shot attempts, while junior Angie Pilat tried three for IUPUI. All three of IUPUI's shots on goal came in the first half as Clark didn't have to make a save in the game's final 77 minutes.

The Jags haven't scored more than one goal in a game since a 3-0 win over South Dakota State on Sept. 10. Since then, IUPUI has netted just five goals in nine games, four of which ended in double overtime ties.

"We have to find ways to score goals," Johnson said. "We've got some opportunites to get a couple more (Mid-Con) wins and to get in the conference tourney."

IUPUI returns to action next weekend when they travel to Valparaiso on Friday afternoon. That Mid-Con match is set to kickoff at 3:00 p.m..
