TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team allowed three scores in a 22-minute stretch in the second half on Sunday as they lost at Indiana State, 3-1. Playing without their top two scorers, the Jaguars were outshot 23-8 overall and 10-3 on goal.
IUPUI senior Maggie Mistovich (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic) led the Jaguars' offensive attack with four shot attempts.
The Jaguars scored in the 13th minute thanks to an own goal by the Indiana State defense. The Sycamores botched a switch in the back, allowing the ball to roll just over the back line. IUPUI nearly returned the favor in the 16th minute when an ISU shot bounded off the head of a Jaguars' defender and narrowly missed going in the goal. The hosts also had a goal disallowed midway through the first half to an offsides penalty.
IUPUI also had some chances to add to the lead. Late in the half, Mia Moody (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) slipped a pass through to Cori Martin (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) for a breakaway. Rachel Rudzis made a great save, coming off her back line to keep the game at 1-0.
The Jags also had a great build thwarted early in the second half. Junior Samantha Sliney (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) crossed a ball to Martin, that an ISU defender blocked as she tried to go near post.
Indiana State finally solved IUPUI goalkeeper Jessie Mann (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and a shorthanded IUPUI defense in the 67th minute. Alyssa Ramsey crossed a ball to Nichole Tiggs, who tied the match at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, Tiggs set up Meaghan Gaffney for the game-winner. Tiggs rolled a pass to Gaffney on the left side, who then flared a shot just over Mann's head.
Lauren Podolski added some insurance in the 89th minute when she beat senior goalkeeper Sarah Webster (Indianapolis, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) with a shot in the middle of the box. Podolski claimed a loose ball before lacing a shot past IUPUI's No. 2 keeper.
Indiana State outshot IUPUI 17-3 in the second half.
The Jags played without scoring leaders Stacy Downing (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Angie Pilat (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central). Sophomore defender Lisa Gebhard (Fond du Lac, Wisc./Fond du Lac) also sat out, forcing head coach Chris Johnson to go with a makeshift starting 11.
"It was tough having to go with a shorter bench, but I thought our kids did a great job out there," Johnson said. "Our back four kind of struggled clearing the ball out and Indiana State kept the pressure on us all day.
"Once the tides changed, they took full advantage of it."
Mann finished with five saves for the Jaguars while Webster made one in 18:06 of work. Rudzis made a pair of saves for ISU.
Tiggs and Podolski both had six shots for Indiana State with Tiggs putting five on goal.
Indiana State improved to 2-4-0 overall while IUPUI dropped to 2-3-0. The Jags return home on Friday to host Ball State. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm at Kuntz Stadium, located at 1502 W. 16th St..
