Senior men's basketball standout Alex Young has been named the IUPUI Sahm's Athlete of the Month for the month of December. The 6-foot-6 lefty averaged 22.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, while helping the Jaguars to a 5-3 record during the month. He was twice named The Summit League Player of the Week and also earned the CollegeInsider.com Lou Henson Award Mid-Major Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
The Indianapolis-native earned national headlines in the Dec. 10 win over Western Kentucky as he poured in an IUPUI Division I record 43 points, marking the most in all of Division I this season. In that game, he hit 14-of-20 from the floor and 12-of-13 from the foul line, while also gathering nine boards and three steals. Later in the month, he helped the Jaguars to back-to-back wins over both Ball State and Valparaiso, averaging 24.5 points in the two wins to earn his fourth career Summit League Player of the Week award.
Young shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 35.9 percent from three-point range in the Jaguars' eight games, while also connecting on 86 percent of his free throw attempts. Defensively, he led the squad with 13 steals and nine blocked shots as the Jags finished the month on a five-game winning streak.
For the season, Young remains the top active scorer in all of Division I college basketball with 1,930 career points. He's now climbed to No. 3 on IUPUI's all-time scoring list and is on the cusp of becoming the 11th player in Summit League history to tally 2,000 career points.
He's now been picked IUPUI's Sahm's Athlete of the Month eight times in his college career.
