Junior men's golfer Michael Powell has been tabbed as the IUPUI Sahm's Male Athlete of the Month for the month of April. The Kokomo, Ind.-native had a stellar month, highlighted by winning The Summit League Championships with a school record, 54-hole 208 (72-69-67). His 208 tournament score was one shot better than the previous IUPUI mark.
Powell became the second Jaguar ever to win Championship MVP honors, capped by his career-best final round 67. He was just one shot off setting a new school 18-hole record and finished with back-to-back birdies to claim the title. With Powell leading the way, IUPUI finished with a Summit League runner-up finish.
He also played well at the adidas Hoosier Invitational, tying for ninth overall with a 54-hole 213 (69-70-74). He helped the Jaguars take fourth of 14 teams at that event. Powell turned in back-to-back 74's at the regular season-ending Boilermaker Invitational, but didn't factor into the overall standings after being disqualified for a scorecard miscue in the first round.
For the month, Powell played 11 rounds and recorded a 73.27 stroke average. He was also voted Second Team All-Summit by the league's 10 head coaches earlier in the month.
