The IUPUI Athletics Department has announced that junior women’s basketball player #Jernisha Cann# has been named IUPUI Female Student-Athlete of the Month for November. Cann set a new school record for steals in a game on her way to three double-doubles during the month.
On November 24, Cann matched her career high with 22 at Gardner-Webb and came away with 13 steals, breaking the old mark of 11 set by Katie Murphy on Dec. 11, 1993. Cann’s total ranks as the second-best single game total this season at the NCAA Division I level.
Averaging 13.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.1 steals in seven games, Cann picked up double-doubles with 19 points and 11 boards versus Morehead State, 22 points and 13 steals at Gardner-Webb, and 17 points and 11 rebounds at Lamar.
Cann has moved into ninth place on the IUPUI career rebounding list, corralling 71 boards in eight games this year, giving her 600 rebounds in 65 career games. The elementary education major needs 13 rebounds to move into eighth place and 147 to take over second. She has tallied 21 career double-doubles.
Among Summit League players, Cann ranks first in steals and third in rebounding this season, after picking up Defensive Player of the Year honors in the 2006-07 campaign. Her three double-doubles also lead the conference.
