Freshman women's runner Amairany Cruz has been named IUPUI Female Athlete of the Month for April 2016. Cruz set three new school records for the month and found herself among The Summit League's top 10 in two different events.
Her best 800 of the month came at the Beach Invitational on Apr. 16 when she set a new school record for the second straight day. After previously breaking the record at Mt. SAC, she followed with a 2:11.95 effort at Long Beach, beating her previous best by nearly a full second.
A week later, she was part of two school records, setting a new standard in the 400 and as the lead leg of the 4x400. In the 400, she spun a program record time of 58.18 at the Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational in Louisville. She then sped off a strong lead lap of the 4x400, helping the quartet to a program best time of 3:59.36.
