Junior men's cross country student-athlete Joey Zielinski has been named IUPUI's Male Athlete of the Month for the September 2014. The South Bend, Ind.-native was IUPUI's top performer in each of his two meet entries during the month.
Zielinski opened the month with a solid effort at the Crusader Classic, finishing third of 41 runners at that meet. He closed the 4K race in a time of 11:11.3, helping the Jaguars to a second-place finish.
Two weeks later, Zielinski placed eighth of 150 runners at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships, helping IUPUI finish second to only nationally ranked Indiana. The Jaguars finished ahead of regionally ranked foes Purdue and Indiana State as the second-place finish was the best in the program's history. Zielinski finished the 8K race in a time of 25:23.9, later earning Summit League Athlete of the Week honors. His time ranks as the sixth-fastest 8k time in The Summit this season.
With Zielinski leading the way, IUPUI closed the month with a No. 9 regional ranking.
