Former IUPUI standout Holly Hoopingarner returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in July 2021. She returned to Indianapolis after spending a season at the University of Florida as a graduate assistant on the Gators' basketball staff. The Gators earned a WNIT bid in Hoopingarner's lone season in Gainesville and defeated Charlotte in the tournament's opening round. 

Hoopingarner starred for the Jags from 2016-20, leading IUPUI to its first conference tournament title in school history and being named Horizon League Tournament MVP. She also earned the Horizon League's Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor, which is awarded to the top male and female student-athlete who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.

Over her career, the Greenwood, Ind.-native was a two-time member of the Horizon League All-Academic Team and was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team in her senior season. She finished her career averaging 8.2 points per game and 2.4 assists per game and shot 37 percent from three-point range and over 80 percent from the free throw line. She became the 27th member of IUPUI's 1,000 point club and also finished with 305 career assists. 

Known for her leadership abilities and tenacity from the point guard spot, Hoopingarner led IUPUI to a 89-39 mark during her four seasons and four straight postseason berths. The Jags won at least 20 games in all four years of her career.

She finished her high school career as the all-time leading scorer at Greenwood High School with 1,614 points. She set records for most points in a game (42) and single season (591) and led her team to Johnson County Championships in 2012 and 2016. She was named the Mid-State All-Conference Player of the Year, as well as the Johnson County Player of the Year. In addition, she was also named to the IBCA/Subway Supreme 15 and to the All-State First Team. She was an Indiana Junior All-Star and an Indiana All-Star following her senior season.
