SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team ran into an offensive buzzsaw on Sunday (Sept. 6) as the Jaguars fell on the road at Notre Dame, 8-0. The Irish (2-0-5) looked the part of a team primed to enter the national polls as they outshot the Jaguars 28-9 overall and 14-6 on goal.
Izzy Engle had a hat trick for the victors and Ellie Hodsden added a pair of scores.
It took Notre Dame a bit of time to get its first goal, but once the dam broke, the hosts showed their dominance.
Hodsden tallied the game-winner in the 22nd minute by flaring a shot over
Gwen Eiler, who was well off her back line, and Gabrielle Poretto scored from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. Engle capped the first half scoring by slotting a shot past Eiler in the 39th minute.
Bristol Kersh scored for the Irish in the 51st minute before Engle added a PK score in the 62nd minute. Engle, Hodsden and Kate Kemmerley all added late scores in the victory.
IU Indy (2-3-1) built a handful of opportunities against the hosts, primarily from
Caroline Kelley and
Madeline Chappa. Both had a pair of shots on goal while
Annaliese Black and
Hannah Roberson also had shots on goal as well.
Sunday's game was a homecoming trip for four Jaguars as the program boasts three student-athletes from nearby Penn High School in Eiler, Roberson and
Anika Guenther. In addition,
JoJo Murphy played high school at Mishawaka Marian High School. Only Guenther didn't see action as she continues to be sidelined by injury.
Eiler, who became the third different goalkeeper to start a match for the Jags this season, registered six saves in the loss.
The Jaguars will return home to host Butler on Thursday night (Sept. 10) at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
