INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team yielded a pair of goals in each half as the Jaguars dropped a home contest to Butler on Thursday night (Sept. 10), 4-0. Chloe Brecht led the Butler attack with two goals and an assist and Riley Gumm tallied the game-winner just over 90 seconds into the contest.
"You can't give away goals. You can't have mistakes and then have a team like Butler not capitalize," head coach
Angela Berry White said. "They're a very good program, that's just what they did tonight. Every mistake we made, they were able to capitalize on it. When we thought we had a sure goal, they made great saves."
Butler (3-2-1) seized momentum at the opening whistle as the first true attacking chance resulted in Gumm redirecting a Brecht cross past
Gwen Eiler for the game's first goal. Butler doubled the lead in the 25th minute when a missed clearance left Alyssa Carlson alone with an empty net and an easy finish.
The Jaguars threatened on more than one occasion, including a lead pass that resulted in
Keilah Muldrow and Butler goalkeeper Addison Ash footrace for the ball well beyond the 18-yard box. While it appeared that the speedy Muldrow won the race, Ash cleared the ball away without allowing an IU Indy attempt. In the 39th minute, rookie
Madeline Chappa blistered a shot from distance that Ash stopped and
Maci Sammons' rebound attempt was cleared aside by a defender, resulting in a corner kick.
Sammons also had a quality flick in the 44th minute off a free kick that went just wide of frame.
Brecht had two brilliant finishes in the second half to account for the scoring, solving
Isabel Oferosky on both efforts.
IU Indy (2-4-1) continued to knock on the door throughout the second half, but never found paydirt. Senior
Elle Blessinger fired high of target from in close in the 77th minute and
Hannah Roberson just missed a score in the game's 86th minute.
Both Eiler and Oferosky finished with one save apiece while Ash made three stops in the shutout. Butler finished with a 14-10 shot advantage and 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Jaguars will close out the non-conference slate on Sunday (Sept. 13) when they trek to Toledo for a 1:00 p.m. kick on ESPN+.
