TOLEDO, Ohio - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team closed its non-conference slate with a 2-2 road draw at Toledo on Sunday (Sept. 13) behind first career goals from
Madeline Chappa and
Addison Stover. The Jaguars took a 2-0 lead into the lockerroom but yielded a pair of second half scores in the road tie.
The Jaguars went in front in the 34th minute when a penalty kick was awarded after a lengthy VAR review. Chappa calmly took the penalty kick, slotting a shot past UT goalkeeper Paige Dornheggen for her first-ever score. Less than two minutes later, Stover blasted a shot past Dornheggen off a setup from
Maci Sammons to take a two-goal advantage.
"It felt amazing to finally get one in the back of the net," Stover said. "My teammates were able to create some space for me to get a good strike on the ball."
Toledo (4-2-1) continued to build scoring chances but were unable to decipher the IU Indy defense in the opening stanza.
The Rockets finally broke through in the 62nd minute when Ella Zoerhoff scored off an assist from Keira Billis following a corner kick. The play was reviewed briefly for a potential offsides call but was ultimately upheld. Later, Zoerhoff tied the game with a nifty turn and blast from the corner of the 18-yard box for her eighth score of the season.
IU Indy (2-4-2) relied heavily on the attacking duo of
Caroline Kelley and
Keilah Muldrow throughout the game with Kelley providing the target, trying to free the speedy Muldrow in space. Kelley had a team-high four shot attempts, putting three on target, while Muldrow had three attempts.
Both Chappa and Stover had two shots apiece.
In goal,
Gwen Eiler made four saves in earning the result while Dornheggen also made four saves.
Toledo finishes with advantages in both shots (18-14) and corner kicks (8-2) while each side put seven shots on goal. The Rockets were previously unblemished in four meetings with Horizon League schools, having defeated Cleveland State and Robert Morris during the preseason and Oakland and Detroit Mercy in the regular season, shutting out all four opponents.
"We feel really good about where we are. The tough non-conference schedule is really going to help us as we move into league play," Stover said. "We are just coming into our own! We are going to be a fun team to watch down the stretch."
The Jaguars will open Horizon League play against league favorite Milwaukee on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
