INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team continued its hot offensive play as the Jaguars tore past Bellarmine at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Thursday (Sept. 3), 5-2. Senior
Lindsey Castillo scored a pair of goals and junior
Annaliese Black contributed a pair of assists and netted the game-winner in the 54th minute.
Hannah Roberson and
Maci Sammons also tallied in the victory.
The five goals scored were the program's most since a five-goal outburst against Tennessee Tech exactly three years prior.
On the heels of a school record 38 shot attempts against Chicago State in their last outing, the Jaguars (2-2-1) unloaded a 23-8 shot margin against the Knights (0-3-1), putting 16 attempts on frame. It was a noticeable uptick in efficiency on Thursday that piloted the win.
"When you score goals, you gotta be happy," head coach
Angela Berry White said. "That's what we've been focusing on the past two days in training was, we have to create more we have to finish our opportunities. That's what we did. (I'm) quite happy with whole team performance."
Castillo staked the Jaguars to a quick 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Black launched a long cross over the top of a Bellarmine defender, finding her attacking teammate making a run. Castillo was able to get an attempt past Bellarmine keeper Anna Jenkins for the game's first goal. Bellarmine equalized in the 28th minute when the speedy Makenzie Simpson got in behind the Jaguars defense and rolled a shot past the hard charging
Isabel Oferosky for her first tally of the season.
The Jaguars took a 2-1 lead to the locker room thanks to Roberson's goal in the 39th minute as she got on the business end of Sammons' cross from the right side. Black got a subtle touch on the cross before Roberson redirected the ball home from point blank range for her sixth career score. Black tallied off a rebound in the 54th minute to extend the lead and Sammons blistered a shot home in the 75th minute. The lead ballooned to 5-1 in the 82nd minute when Castillo scored thanks to assists from
Madeline Chappa and
Megan Swift for her first career brace.
"I think we're starting to get to know each other a lot better and finding the chemistry and knowing each other as players - who likes it long, who likes it at their feet," Castillo said of the energized play of the attack.
Bellarmine added a late tally against sophomore goalkeeper
Gwen Eiler in the 89th minute to cap the evening's scoring.
Black, Castillo and Sammons all attempts four shots apiece while both Oferosky and Eiler made one save each. Eiler was credited with the win in net in her collegiate debut.
White was able to shuffle bodies throughout the evening with senior
Elle Blessinger playing a team-high 77 minutes. In addition to Eiler's debut,
Ella Green and
Caitlyn Hansen also made their season debuts as 21 different Jaguars saw playing time.
The Jaguars will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 6) when they take on Notre Dame at noon on ACCNX.
