JAGS EARN HARD-FOUGHT WIN OVER BULLDOGS, 4-3

Gunwall, Nguyen, Mercer and Kryscio earn singles points in the win

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men's tennis team captured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Butler on Friday (March 6) in Indianapolis, earning the decisive point in singles play to secure the win.

After dropping the doubles point, the Jaguars responded with four singles victories to claim the team triumph.

At the top of the lineup, Konner Gunwall set the tone with a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Ronin Kasday 6-3, 6-4. Owen Nguyen followed with a gritty three-set comeback at No. 2, rebounding from a first-set setback to outlast Riccardo Baldi 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Eli Mercer added another key point at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Nicolas Arts. Cameron Kryscio clinched a crucial straight-sets decision at No. 4, edging Nicholas Shirley in a first-set tiebreak before pulling away for a 7-6 (5-0), 6-2 victory.

Butler claimed wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but the Jaguars' depth in the middle of the lineup proved decisive in the one-point contest.

In doubles action, Butler secured the opening point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, while the No. 3 match featuring Brandon Pham and Jai Dutta was left unfinished.

With the victory, the Jaguars move forward with momentum after earning a tight in-state win over the Bulldogs. IU Indy will next travel to Louisville on Sunday, March 8.
