LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The IU Indy softball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Bellarmine on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field. The Jaguars (3-20) outhit the Knights 10-9 but were unable to overcome a four-run sixth inning by Bellarmine (7-16).
IU Indy struck first in the second inning when
Reese Rosenbaum delivered an RBI single to score
Kalilah Dela Cruz and give the Jags a 1-0 lead. Bellarmine answered with a two-run double in the bottom half to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Jaguars evened the score in the third in exciting fashion as
Mae Munson stole home as part of a double steal with
Paige McPhearson, tying the game at 2-2. IU Indy regained the lead in the fourth when
Adeline Blackwell singled to center to bring home Rosenbaum and make it 3-2.
Bellarmine responded with a run in the fourth to knot the game at 3-3 before breaking through in the sixth. A three-run home run highlighted the four-run frame that put the Knights ahead 7-3.
IU Indy mounted a final push in the seventh. After a pair of base runners reached,
Pallas Dominion singled to right to score
Molly Kable and cut the deficit to 7-4. However, the Jaguars were unable to bring the tying run to the plate.
Rosenbaum led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and an RBI, while McPhearson added two hits, including a double.
Lily Roush (1-6) took the loss in the circle for IU Indy.
The Jaguars will return home for their home opener on Sunday, March 15, hosting Valparaiso for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
