INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team dropped a tough home outcome on Sunday (Aug. 31) to Ball State, 1-0. Visiting Ball State (2-2) scored the game's lone goal in the 31st minute when Addie Chester maneuvered through an array of defenders before unloading a shot past senior goalkeeper
Arissa North.
Both teams finished with 12 shots attempts, although the Cardinals closed with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
North made six saves in the loss while BSU keeper Grace Konopatzki posted four stops in the shutout win.
"They showed a lot of heart. We're short-handed - we had a rough week this past week with a couple kids. We've got a kid on crutches and we've got another kid who's out with a knee injury. I'm not using excuses, but our starting goalkeeper is out, but we showed a lot of heart," head coach Angela Berry White said. "(Some) kids stepped in, stepped up and put out some good minutes for us, which was very important.
"We're building and we have to use this as a stepping stone moving forward."
Ball State started the match in full attack mode, but couldn't solve the Jaguar defense, despite a pair of quality attempts in the opening minutes. It took the IU Indy (1-4) some time to find its footing, but eventually
Emma Antoine and
Caroline Kelley found some seams in the attack, but were unable to get anything past Konopatzki.
In the 22nd minute, it looked like
Lindsey Castillo broke free up the left side, but she was flagged offsides, negating a positive build.
Chester took matters into her own hands in the 31st minute, single-handedly working through the Jaguar defense before delivering her fourth score of the young season.
IU Indy continued to create opportunities in the second chance including an opportunity from
Sophia Davila in the 75th minute that she hit right at the keeper. In the 79th minute,
Maci Sammons got into dangerous territory but was unable to get a firm touch on a shot and in the 83rd minute, freshman
JoJo Murphy blasted a shot from long distance just off target.
The final build of the match found Castillo free on the back side, but resulted in a scrum with the attacker, a defender and Konopatzki pouncing on a loose ball.
White's squad was without the services of starting goalkeeper
Sarah Bambrick and regulars
Anika Guenther and
Bethany Hartigan, all sitting due to injury. Freshman midfielder
Shannon Phillips was a gametime decision, but ultimately responded with 51 minutes of work.
Caroline Kelley had a team-high three shots while Antoine attempted two.
The Jaguars will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 4, when they face Illinois State at 7:00 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
