MEN'S SOCCER UPENDED AT LOUISVILLE, 4-0

IU Indy (0-1-2) outshot by a 25-2 margin on Friday night (Aug. 29)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The IU Indianapolis men's soccer team ran into an offensive buzzsaw on Friday night (Aug. 29) as the Jaguars fell on the road at Louisville, 4-0. The host Cardinals unloaded a 25-2 onslaught in shot attempts, coupled with 13 corner kicks.

Quinton Wilson had a pair of goals for the victors and Noah De Blasis had a goal and two assists for the hosts.

"I'm hoping we learned that if we don't show up, this kind of stuff can happen," head coach Sid van Druenen said. "I told the guys before the game, I thought the last four weeks have been good. Undefeated in preseason and some really nice results early on, but you're always fearful of some lackidasical-ness, some comfort creeping in the team. We noticed it a little bit in training yesterday.

"Today we just weren't good enough. I'm hoping we can learn the lesson, because if you don't show up against an ACC team, then you lose 4-0. That's just the reality of the game."

Louisville (3-0) went in front in the 24th minute when Olayinka Ogunleye scored from in close as the Jaguars were unable to clear a bouncing ball out of danger after a corner kick. The play was originally ruled offsides by the linesman, but overturned in favor of the hosts after the video review.

The goal was part of Louisville's dominant offensive first half as the Cardinals outshot the Jaguars 10-0 and collected a 7-0 margin in corner kicks. The Jags only threats were a couple restarts deep in UofL territory, but neither of which resulted in shot attempts.

Any chance of a comeback became all the more challenging in the opening minute of the second half when junior defender Jago Thompson-Roberts was sent off with a red card for committing a foul as the final line of defense. On the ensuing free kick just beyond the 18-yard box, the Cardinals hit the crossbar and then had the rebound attempt cleared off the line by an IU Indy defender.

The Cards doubled up the lead in the 53rd minute when Wilson turned the corner against a Jaguar defender and laced a shot past a diving Cameron Maung-Maung and inside the far post. Wilson completed the brace in the 58th minute on a brilliant volley off a long pass from De Blasis. DeBlasis tacked on a score in the 79th minute as part of a four-point evening.

Offensively, the Jaguars didn't get a shot attempt until the 71st minute when sophomore Stan Klaver tried a drive from long distance through traffic. The Jags just missed getting on the scoreboard in the 74th minute when Luke Kegerreis redirected a Marcus Dahn Khoa Nguyen corner kick back to the near post. Luke Kalavitz was the closest Jaguar, but was unable to steer an attempt on frame.

"I'm glad it's a short bus ride home and I'm glad we have a game coming up in two days so we can wash this feeling away," van Druenen said.

The Jaguars will return to action on Monday (Sept. 1) when they travel across town to face Butler at 7:00 p.m. inside the Sellick Bowl.
