DETROIT, Mich. – The IU Indianapolis softball team capped off its regular season in dominate fashion, sweeping the Saturday doubleheader against Detroit Mercy. Behind dominant pitching and timely offense, the Jaguars took the first game 5-0 in extra innings before cruising to a 10-1 run-rule victory in the second.
In a tightly contested pitchers' duel in game one, neither team could break through in the first seven innings. The Jaguars finally jumped on the board in the eighth inning with a go-ahead RBI single from
Molly Kable that brought home
Kendal Calvert for the game's first run. One batter later,
Kinsey Pfeiffer delivered the knockout blow with a grand slam to left field, plating four and sealing the 5-0 win.
Starter
Alexa Holman was stellar in the circle, tossing 8.0 shutout innings with two strikeouts and allowing just one hit.
Paige McPhearson totaled two hits in the win.
The Jaguars carried their momentum into the second game, striking early and often.
Callie Dickerson opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first, followed by a solo homer from Kable in the third inning. A five-run outburst in the fourth frame put the game out of reach, highlighted by two-RBI singles from both Kable and Pfeiffer.
IU Indy tacked on three more in the fifth inning, including a sacrifice fly from
Morgan Gilbert and RBI from McPhearson and
Isabelle Waggner. Detroit Mercy managed a run in the bottom half, but the Jags secured the run-rule win at 10-1.
Clara Phariss earned the win in the circle for IU Indy, throwing 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and allowing just two hits. Kable and Dickerson were both perfect at the plate going 3-for-3. Kable added a team-high three RBI and three runs while Dickerson and Pfeiffer each added two RBI in the game two win.
With the sweep, IU Indy finishes the regular season with their best record since 2017 at 21-25. The Jags also locked in the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Tournament. IU Indy will open postseason play against No. 6 Green Bay on Wednesday, May 7 at 2:30 PM.
