INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy men's tennis team put up a strong fight on their home courts Saturday afternoon but fell just short in a tightly contested 4-3 match against Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky.
The Jaguars came out strong in doubles play, earning the early point with wins on courts one and three. The duo of
Nate Day and
Konner Gunwall cruised to a dominant 6-1 win over Northern Kentucky's top pair, while
Steven Paz and
Will Thurin handled business at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 victory. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with IU Indy trailing 3-4.
In singles action, IU Indy got wins from
Noah Viste and
Pumiphat Sukkho. Viste picked up a gritty three-set win at No. 4, defeating Jackson Poulos 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, Sukkho looked sharp in a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
Despite the strong efforts, the Jaguars couldn't close out the match, dropping three tough three-setters on courts two, three, and six.
Will Thurin battled hard but came up short in a marathon on court six, falling 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in what proved to be the decisive point.
IU Indy moves to 8-11 on the season and will next face the Cleveland State Vikings on Saturday, April 12.
