CHICAGO – The IU Indy men's tennis team closed out its regular season in commanding fashion on Saturday, earning a 6-1 victory over Chicago State.
The Jaguars set the tone early by sweeping doubles play to secure the opening point. The partnership of
Nate Day and
Konner Gunwall earned a 6-1 win in the No. 1 spot, while
Will Thurin and
Steven Paz shut out their opponents 6-0 at No. 2.
Eli Mercer and
Pumiphat Sukkho added a third doubles win via default at the No. 3 spot, giving the Jags full control heading into singles.
In singles action, the Jaguars took five of the six matches. Thurin and Gunwall delivered dominate 6-0, 6-0 performances at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, blanking their Cougar opponents. Mercer added a straight-set win at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3. IU Indy also picked up default victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles due to an incomplete Chicago State lineup.
With the win, IU Indy wraps up the regular season and will now prepare for the Horizon League Tournament. This year's tournament will be held at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan from Friday, April 25-Sunday, April 27.
