YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The IU Indy men's tennis team came up short against Youngstown State on Saturday, March 22, dropping a 5-2 decision on the road.
Despite strong performances in singles play by
Eli Mercer and
Pumiphat Sukkho, the Jaguars were unable to overcome the Penguins' depth.
In doubles play, the Jaguars managed one win but could not secure the doubles point.
Nate Day and
Konner Gunwall took a 6-4 victory over Chester Wickwire and William Rassat at No. 1 doubles. However, Youngstown State responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, as
Noah Viste and
Kamil Kozerski fell at No. 2, 6-2, and
Steven Paz and
Will Thurin dropped the No. 3 match, 7-5.
In singles action, Kozerski fell to Youngstown State's Onder Balci at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Paz was defeated by Filip Avdeev, 6-3, 6-2, while Viste put up a fight but ultimately lost 7-5, 6-3 to Ethan Dasset.
Eli Mercer delivered a strong performance for the Jaguars, securing a 6-3, 6-2 victory over William Rassat at No. 4 singles.
Konner Gunwall won the first set in his match against Matteo Ceradelli but was edged out in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6, 10-4.
Pumiphat Sukkho added another point for IU Indy with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Mihai Haita.
With the loss, IU Indianapolis moves to 7-8 on the season and will continue Horizon League play when they travel to Cleveland State tomorrow, March 23. First serve is set for 2:00 PM.
