FULLERTON, Calif – During day two of IU Indy softball's California trip, the Jags split the Saturday contests, winning game one against CSUN then falling to Cal State Fullerton. IU Indy totaled 16 hits on the day while freshman
Lily Roush earned her first career win.
In game one, the Jags defeated CSUN despite a late surge by the Matadors, 5-3. Freshman
Reese Rosenbaum provided the winning run with a double to left center to score
Corinne Martz in the fifth inning.
Both teams were held scoreless through the second inning. The Jags struck first with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Callie Dickerson started the inning off with a single to shortstop. Rosenbaum then moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With just one out,
Pallas Dominion recorded her first collegiate RBI with a double to left field, scoring Dickerson and giving the Jags a 1-0 lead. Then with runners on second and third with two outs,
Paige McPhearson singled to center to score two runs and extend the Jags lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, the Jags added two runs on three hits. Dickerson started things off again for IU Indy with a single to left center. Martz then entered the game to pinch ran for Dickerson. Rosenbaum doubled to left center to score Martz and ultimately score the winning run at 4-0.
Morgan Gilbert singled to left field to score Rosenbaum and give the Jags a five run cushion.
With a sac fly, the Matadors got one back in the top of the sixth, 5-1. Then in the top of the seventh inning, with three outs left, CSUN tried to extend the game. With two outs and runners on first and second, M___ Carman tripled to right center to score two and cut the lead to 5-3.
Kendal Calvert then recorded the last out for the Jaguars, squeezing the fly out in center field to end the game.
The Jags earned the game one win with five runs on eight hits and no errors. Dickerson led the Jags at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run while McPhearson collected two RBI. Gilbert, Rosenbaum and Dominion each added one RBI. Freshman
Lily Roush (W, 1-0) earned the win, throwing a complete game giving up just three runs on seven hits.
IU Indy then suffered a 9-1 defeat to Cal State Fullerton in game two. The Titans wasted no time, jumping out to an early lead and securing a run rule victory in six innings.
Fullerton's offense was explosive in the first inning, as they put up a four-spot. After Ava Arce singled to left center, she advanced to second on the throw and scoring Sarah Perez and Kristalyn Romulo. Leanna Garcia followed with a single through the right side, plating Arce and Colby McClinton for a 4-0 lead.
The Titans added to their lead in the second inning, as McClinton's bunt single scored Perez from third, extending the advantage to 5-0.
The Jags fought back in the third inning, as
Piper Stephens reached on a fielder's choice, allowing
Lexi Gordon to advance to second while
Molly Kable crossed the plate for IU Indy's lone run of the game, cutting Fullerton's lead to 5-1.
Fullerton continued to build on their lead in the fifth inning. Alexia Lopez's bunt single to third base brought home Perez to make it 6-1.
In the sixth inning, Fullerton sealed the victory with a three-run walk-off. Jenna Stevens doubled down the left field line, driving in Ferdman. Sarah Coccillos followed with a double to left center, scoring Stevens, and Annika Sogsti's single to left field brought in Coccillos for the 9-1 final.
The Jags were led offensively by Kable,
Tori Candler, and Gordon, who each recorded two hits. Clara Pharris (L, 0-2) took the loss for IU Indy, allowing six runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings of work.
With the Saturday split, the Jags are now 1-3 to start the 2025 season and will next travel to South Carolina for six games starting on Friday, February 14.
