MEN’S TENNIS SPLITS WEEKEND MATCHES

The Jags defeated Marian then fell to Ball State

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy men's tennis team split a pair of decisions this weekend as they defeated Marian on Friday, Feb. 21 then fell to Ball State on Saturday. The Jags earned the doubles point in both matches.
 
In the first match of the weekend, the Jags defeated the Marian Knights, 6-1. IU Indy started the match off winning the doubles point. Noah Viste and Kamil Kozerski teamed up in the No. 2 match, winning, 6-1. Will Thurin and Steven Paz secured the doubles point with a win in the No. 3 spot, 6-1. Nate Day and Konner Gunwall were winning 3-2 in the No. 1 spot when the Jags sealed the doubles point.
 
With an early 1-0 lead, the Jags then secured five of the six singles points. Kozerski earned the No. 1 singles point in a dominate two sets, 6-2, 6-1. Paz won the No. 2 match in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Eli Mercer took the No. 4 match, 7-6, 6-4 while Thurin won the No. 5 point, 6-3, 7-6. Pumiphat Sukkho recorded the sixth point for the Jags with the No. 6 singles win, 6-2, 6-4.

Noah Viste fell in the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-0.
 
After earning the win over Marian, the Jags then traveled to Muncie, Ind. to face the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday. The Jags fell to the Cardinals after taking an early 1-0 lead with the doubles point, 5-2.
 
IU Indy earned the doubles point for the ninth time this season in just 11 matches. Day and Gunwall earned the No. 1 doubles win at 7-6 while Paz and Thurin won the No. 3 match at 7-5.
 
Moving on to singles play, the Jags couldn't close out the win, falling in five of the six singles matches. Freshman Vincent Nauta earned the sole singles point for the Jags in the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7.
 
Kozerski dropped the No. 1 point, 6-3, 6-4 while Paz fell in the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-0. Mercer lost the No. 3 point, 6-2, 6-3 and Sukkho dropped the No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-3. Thurin rounded out the lineup in the No. 5 spot, falling, 6-4, 6-2.
 
IU Indy is now 5-6 on the season and will next host Butler on Friday, Feb. 28. First serve between the Jags and Bulldogs is set for 1:30 PM.
