INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy men's tennis team opened their 2025 season at home on Saturday. The Jags fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies in a hard-fought match, 4-3.
Steven Paz,
Eli Mercer and
Pumiphat Sukkho earned singles wins in the loss.
The Jags opened Saturday's match in doubles play. The Huskies took the doubles point after sealing doubles wins in the number one and three spots.
Kamil Kozerski and
Noah Viste kept the Jags in the fight for the doubles points with a win at number two doubles, 6-3. The partnership of Konnor Gunwall and
Nate Day fell in the number one spot, 6-4 while
Will Thurin and Paz fell in the number three spot, 6-4.
After falling behind 1-0, the Jags fought to keep the score close with three singles wins, but the Huskies matched their tally in singles play to seal the win at 4-3.
Paz earned the number three singles win in comeback fashion after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6. Mercer took the number four singles match after dropping the first set as well, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman
Pumiphat Sukkho cruised to his number six singles victory in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Kozerski dropped the number one singles match, 6-2, 6-3 while Viste fell in the number two spot, 6-3, 7-6. Freshman
Vincent Nauta fell in the number five singles spot, 6-3, 6-2.
IU Indy will now go on the road for back-to-back matches before returning home to host Eastern Illinois on January 31.
