INDIANAPOLIS – With the snow falling outside, the IU Indy swim and dive teams stayed hot as they defeated the Youngstown State Penguins on Friday night in the Natatorium. The women's team earned the victory 186-95 while the men's team won by a score of 208-73.
Emmaleigh Zietlow and
Nathan Rariden each earned three individual wins.
The women's swim team kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Addy Hirsbrunner,
Victoria Surdyka,
Lillian Brandt and
Luca McGee combined for a 1:42.93 finish. The men's team followed with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.14.
Jack Gallob,
Zach Drotar,
Hugo Arteaga and
Luca Eckert earned the win.
Moving onto individual races, Zietlow led the way for the women's team with three first-place finishes. She took the top spot in the 1650 free (16:46.98), 200 free (1:48.99) and the 500 free (4:52.36). Hirsbrunner earned first in the 100 back (56.03) followed by
Malayna Mancinelli who finished in second with a time of 59.02. Hirsbrunner also took first in the 200 back at 2:01.91.
Brandt earned two first-place finishes, starting with the 200 fly at 2:03.64. She also took first in the 100 fly (55.07) followed by Hirsbrunner in second (57.86) and
Dani Stemper in third (58.05). McGee also took two top times with a first-place finish in the 100 free (51.32) and the 50 free (23.82).
Tori Barnet finished in second in the 50 free at 24.63.
Surdyka earned a first-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.56 while
Ali Fitzgerald took first in the 200 breast at 2:22.97. Morgan Frausto took second in the 200 breast (2:23.88) while
Kaylee Dexter took third (2:23.99).
On the men's side,
Nathan Rariden led the way with three individual wins while
Grayson Tidwell, Arteaga and Tuner Long each recorded two first-place finishes. Rariden took first in the 200 free (1:37.91), 100 free (45.22) and the 500 free (4:33.79).
Tidwell won the 200 back (1:49.39) while Gallob finished right behind him in second at 1:50.29). Tidwell also won the 100 back (49.81), as the Jags swept the top three spots with
Ben Kimmel taking second (50.82) and Gallob in third (51.19).
Turner Long won the 200 breast (2:00.38) and the 200 IM (1:50.74). Arteaga earned the first-place finish in the 100 fly (48.93) while
Isaac Wilson finished in second (49.63) and
Max Gerke took third (50.09). The Jags also swept the top three spots in the 50 free with Arteaga earning the top spot at 20.71.
David Niemiec took second (20.72) and Eckert earned third (20.82).
Carson Szotek earned a first-place finish in the 200 fly at 1:49.77.
The Jags finished out the swimming portion with the 400 free relay. The women's relay team of Zietlow, McGee, Brandt and Barnet earned the top spot at 3:29.63. The men's team of Eckert, Rariden, Wilson and Will Gorman took first at 3:02.36).
On the diving boards for IU Indy,
Sebastian Otero and
Alaina Heyde each took the top spot. Otero won the 1-meter dive with a score of 359.70 while
Adam Schmehl took second at 320.25 and
Levi Vorreyer earned third at 256.13. Heyde took first in the women's 3-meter dive at 273.00.
The Jags will conclude diving and compete against the Youngstown State Penguins again tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10:00 AM.
